Shikha Mukerjee joined The Economic Times in 1978 and remained with the Times of India Group until 2001. She launched the Kolkata edition of The Times of India and later became Political Editor. Since 2001 she has been a freelance writer, contributing opinions and analysis on politics and policy. She also participates as a commentator on television, both national and regional. In 1978, she was one of the first full-time women journalists in Kolkata.
She is an alumnus of Lady Shri Ram College, New Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
