South Asian Women in Media (India) condemns the attack on Meghalaya Journalist and Editor of the Shillong Times, Patricia Mukhim, whose home was targeted by unidentified assailants in Shillong with a petrol bomb on April 17th.
While it is very fortunate that no injuries were sustained, the seriousness of the attack on a senior journalist’s home must not be underestimated. SAWM India urges the Meghalaya government and the police authorities to ensure a thorough investigation into the attack and any possible conspiracy to harm or intimidate Ms. Mukhim, who is a powerful voice for the region, for women’s rights and journalistic freedoms.
South Asian Women in Media (SAWM) is a network of women media professionals in South Asia. SAWM works for freedom of press, increased participation of women in the media, a gender-sensitive work environment and a gender-equal outlook in the media. Launched in April 2008, SAWM’s central secretariat is in Lahore, Pakistan and the association has country chapters in eight members of SAARC. SAWM helps women working in media to network across borders, and with international rights organizations, to assert their rights and defend their interests.
